Raj Thackeray demands apology from Jaya Bachchan

Mumbai: September 9, 2008 -  Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray has demanded an unconditional apology from Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan for her remark on Hindi. If she did not do so his party would stall the releases of all the movies involving the Bachchan family.

“We will not allow any movie of which the Bachchan family is a part to be released until Bachchan tenders an unconditional apology,” he told reporters here on Monday.

At the promo of ‘Drona’ here on Saturday, Ms. Bachchan reportedly said: “Hum U.P. ke log hai, hume Hindi mein baat karni chahiye.[We are from Uttar Pradesh and should speak in Hindi].” MNS called it an “insult to the Marathi people,” and appealed to the Marathi community to boycott all the products endorsed by the Bachchans. spokesperson Sachin More said

Asked what steps the police would take, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K.L. Prasad said: “We cannot speak of ifs and buts. You are saying it is a threat. Till I get a confirmation of what the threat is I cannot react.”

The Dadar police station issued a fresh restraint order against Mr. Thackeray, on Monday, in connection with the issue of Marathi signboards.

It reiterated the terms of an earlier show cause notice issued against him, banning him from making inflammatory speeches and taking out rallies.
