New Delhi, July 24, 2008 – IR Summary -After the UPA govt. succeeded in winning ‘No Confidence Motion’ which was excellently directed and controlled by CPI (M) veteran leader Somnath Chatterjee as speaker in the Lok Sabha on 22nd July, the CPI expelled him for having disobeyed his party’s directions wherein the party had asked him to act as member of their party and not as speaker of the Lok Sabha. Mr. Chatterjee refused to oblige his party and maintained the high dignity and tradition of the position of the Speaker.
The CPI alleged “anti-party activities” against Mr. Chatterjee and expelled him from their party. The CPM Politburo took this decision against him held here on Wednesday after the Left parties, along with other Opposition parties, failed to bring down the UPA government over Indo-US Nuke Deal.
Mr. Manmohan Singh called on Mr. Chatterjee and showed a great goodwill gesture by requesting him to continue as Speaker without any change and praised him for the impartial way he conducted the No Confidence Motion and controlled the audience so successfully.
LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan, another UPA leader, also said here today that Mr. Chatterjee should remain the Lok Sabha Speaker despite being expelled by his parent party.
Though Chatterjee is expected to attend the Commonwealth Speaker’s Conference, which is pre-scheduled, representing India, there is immense pressure on him to quit his post from the Left, which has no meaning for Chatterjee now.
