60 MLAs resign and condemn decision on Telangana as separate state

MIL/Agencies, Dec 10, 2009

Hyderabad, India: December 10, 2009 – IR Summary/Agencies -

The decision of Central bosses to consider to create a new state of Telangana within Andhra Pradesh on Thursday has created a wave in political parties in Andhra Pradesh. The MLAs have strongly condemned the Congress high command's "unilateral decision" to initiate the process for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

As a result, around 60 legislators belonging to coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of the state, and three MLCs from the Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Praja Rajya Party, have submitted their resignations to the Speaker. The Congress has 158 out of the 294 seats in the Assembly with just 10-seat majority.

The Assembly Speaker Kiran Kumar Reddy has declined to accept their resignations on the plea that it is an act of haste and not with firm mind, hence may not accept their resignations.

As per PTI they said: "This decision is very painful for us. Lakhs of poeple from other regions of the state have come to Hyderabad in search of livelihood. What would be their fate if the state is split," P Venkatramaya, a Congress legislator from Krishna district, said in the Assembly.

Telugu Desam MLA P Raghunatha Reddy said they resigned from their posts as the Congress took a unilateral decision to move a motion in the state Assembly for the formation of Telangana state.
