Mohali, India - October 21, 2008 – IR Summary/Agencies – Paceman Zaheer Khan took three wickets in four balls here today to rub out Australia's last, limited chances of forcing a draw and pushed India to a comprehensive 320-run victory in the second cricket test, a great win for India that enhanced the grade of their Cricket.
Australia, which resumed the last morning at 141-5 chasing an unlikely 516, lasted 18.4 overs on the fifth day after being rocked by Khan, who finished with 3-71.
It was Australia's seventh-heaviest defeat in terms of runs and came only a week after it missed opportunities to win the first test at Bangalore. India, which recorded its largest victory by runs over any opponent, leads the four-match series 1-0.
Australia skipper Ricky Ponting said his lineup lost the ascendancy on the opening day.
"Right from the first morning India were aggressive and took the momentum away from us," he said. "We've been under pressure and fighting from the start. They deserved to win, they outplayed us in every aspect."
An unfortunate aspect of the game For India was that their left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan was charged here today with breaching cricket's international code of conduct after an on-field exchange with Australia's Matthew Hayden during the second Test.
As per agency reports including AFP, Zaheer, 30, was cited by match referee Chris Broad after exchanging words with Hayden and pointing him to the pavilion after the opening batsman's dismissal by Harbhajan Singh.
Hayden had complained to on-field umpire Rudi Koertzen, who was standing at square leg, when he left the ground after being trapped leg before by Singh for 29 in the over before lunch.
Zaheer has been charged with a Level 2 offence for conduct contrary to the spirit of the game, an the International Cricket Council (ICC) statement said, and was set to attend a disciplinary hearing with Broad.
He runs the risk of a fine or a suspension from either one Test match or two one-day internationals.
Hayden and Singh clashed during India's tour of Australia this year, when the Australian described the spinner as an "obnoxious weed." Singh later called Hayden a "big liar."
Khan's performance was pivotal as India crushed Australia by 320 runs to go 1-0 up in the four-Test series on Tuesday.
