New Delhi, India: August 8, 2008 – Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist - Switzerland does not like to block the waiver for India at the NSG in spite of the fact that it holds strong views on non-proliferation issues. There are also certain other countries who may not give their consent so easily, most of them are still undecided.
Switzerland's Ambassador to India Dominique Dreyer stated that his government appreciates the "importance of the nuclear energy" for India's economic growth and may not block the NSG Waiver for India, even though the issue is yet undecided.
"Government of Switzerland is very much in favour of India developing nuclear energy but Switzerland is also concerned about problem of non-proliferation," he told PTI.
Switzerland along with New Zealand, Austria, Ireland and are seen as the difficult countries at the NSG as all the four countries insist that such an exemption should not be given to a country which is not a member of the NPT.
The stand of the Switzerland is likely to be critical at the August 21-22 meeting of NSG which works by consensus and opposition by even one country could hamper India's prospects of having trade with international community in nuclear field.
Though the situation for India is tough, it is likely to get the clearance in view of its friendly relations and excellent behavior on international level.
However, the chances are bright as per American lobby, who is doing their spade work to get the line through for next the final step.
