Antony orders probe into woman's charge
MIL/TOI/TNN, Jul 17, 2008.

New Delhi: July 17, 2008 - Even as the army vehemently denied the allegations of "physical and mental torture" levelled by Captain Poonam Kaur against her seniors, Defence Minister A K Antony on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the episode.

"The minister has asked the army brass to hold a detailed inquiry into the allegations to establish the truth and report back to him," said a defence ministry official.

Captain Poonam Kaur, posted at the ASC (Army Service Corps) battalion at Kalka in Haryana since October 2007, has accused three of her senior officers at the unit of physically and mentally torturing her, apart from illegally placing her under house arrest.

The army, in turn, has dubbed her allegations of physical and mental harassment as "baseless". "It's also clarified that Captain Poonam Kaur has not been placed under any restrictions and is totally free to move around," said the army.

"She had indulged in similar activities during her last posting at Misamari in Assam, where she refused to carry out her assignment duties. This is recorded in her profile," it added. While the inquiry will ascertain the truth, this is yet another indicator that the experience of inducting women as officers in the forces since the early-1990s has been largely uneven.

Women officers, for instance, often complain of a condescending attitude from their colleagues and seniors in the predominantly male-environs of the armed forces.
