New Delhi , India – July 8, 2008 – IR Summary/TOI - The Left parties in a letter to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, copies of which were circulated to the media, had made it clear that there was no point in going ahead with the proposed meeting of the UPA-Left committee on the deal on July 10 in view of PM's remarks.
The Left party also alleged that the text of the safeguards agreements negotiated with the IAEA secretariat has not been made available to them yet.
However, in response to Prakash Karat’s letter, the Foreign Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said on behalf of the govt. that the full text of nuclear safeguards agreement could not be shared as it is a "privileged" confidential document between Indian government and IAEA.
“Those wanting full text of the safeguards agreement would have had to join the government to have access to it,” said Mukherjee.
Mukherjee however added that the summary of safeguards agreement with IAEA was already given to Left parties, and that’s enough to form an idea what it contains.
The reply of Pranab Mukherjee indicates that the UPA govt. has played a trump card to discard the disloyal partner.
