Pak captain Malik cries foul in selection
MIL/Timesnow, Jun 27, 2008.
June 27, 2008- All is well with Team India, but all's surely not well in the home team camp. Rattled by his team's loss despite his strokeful hundred, Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik has ridiculed the selectors for not giving him a winning eleven.
It was not too long ago that Pakistan had suffered an embarassing record 140 run defeat to the Indians at Mirpur, but Captain Malik and his team had won back the faith of their fans with a deserving win in the tri-series final.
But another resounding loss to the archrivals - that too at home - left the fans red faced. However, Pakistan skipper explained his loss due to the absence of a genuine off-spinner in spin friendly conditions.
"We are still missing one off spinner...but we are looking forward to the 2nd round," Malik said in the post-match presentation.
Malik, an off-spinner himself, had returned to rolling his arm over only recently after being pulled up by board president Dr Nasim Ashraf. But with cramps rendering him unable to bowl on Thursday, the captain expressed his displeasure for not being given the right combination.
When asked about missing an off-spinner in the side, Malik said, "Ask the selectors about it, captain will play with the eleven he gets."
Malik raising fingers at the selection committee was bound to raise a furore at the post match press conference. When pressed further to explain if the selectors were indeed responsible for the loss, Malik said, “Inputs are taken from captain and coach but the decision lies with the selectors."
"It is in the central contract that in home series, the selectors will give the playing eleven," he clarified.
With every loss, the problems with the Pakistan cricket team are coming to the fore, the Indian team, on the other hand, is going from strength to strength after every win.
