Indo-US Nuke Deal in doldrums, Left Adament
MIL/Agencies, Jun 21, 2008. IR Summary
New Delhi/Srinagar: June 21: IR Summary/Agencies - Congress led UPA has got another warning from Left that they should not take any step unless they get their approval and that looks to be impossible, the Govt. would have no other option but to go for the deal and for that how much risk Manmohan Singh and Sonia can take, it is up to them.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) is adamant not to cooperate the govt. and no they want Mulayam to support the Government. So far Mulayam is concerned, he shall most certainly side by Sonia and get the deal through.
Left parties claim to be opposing the nuclear deal being anti- country and its independent foreign policy but the whole world knows that the stand taken by CPI is not right, they look to be dictated by some third force. Diverting the subject, the CPI National Council’s Secretary Shemeem Faizee said:
"It will be appropriate for the Prime Minister not to be adamant but rather concentrate on curbing the price rise," he said. If at all the deal works out, the results will be visible only after 2020, he added.
Faizee said the country produces four per cent of electricity through nuclear material. The Government claims electricity generation will increase to 11 per cent after the Indo-US civil nuclear cooperation pact.
"We do not understand why waste millions of rupees for a mere 7 per cent rise. Instead, we should step up work on Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipline." Faizee said the Left parties will not hesitate to do so if the Government signs the deal.
