Solar flare blasts may collapse Satellites: Dr. Raj Baldev

MIL/Interview, Jun 9, 2008

New Delhi, India: June 9, 2008: Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist from India, in his interview to Sofia Raj, gives his views on satellite communications installed in the sky by different countries, which he feels, are risky projects unless safeguarded from the Solar Flare Blasts.

Dr. Raj Baldev said: “ I have already given my views several times that the Solar Flares can damage the energetic particles and magnetic flux on the Earth to a great extent and make the satellite, whether communication or otherwise   unserviceable at any time.

Actually when a solar flare blasts energetic particles and magnetic flux on the Earth, the satellites are generally on the front line. So when the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) interact with the Earth's magnetosphere, there is a natural huge injection of energetic electrons into the Earth's radiation belts and that has every possibility of causing heavy damages to the satellites, whatever the purpose of its installation, whether communication or otherwise, the damage can be caused to any extent and it can be as sever as unbelievable. We are lucky that so far our satellites are safe but there is no surety in future.

The scientists must do something to safeguard them in future from the solar eruptions. In scientific language, it is the magnetosphere (protective layers of geomagnetic field lines) that traps energetic particles in a volume of space known as the Van Allen belt.

The satellites installed by different countries in the world are continually traveling through this high radiation environment. Most satellites are protected to an extent but it can’t be taken as fool proof, the worst from the Van Allen belt can at any time crush them or throw them out of their original positions depending on Solar Flare.

The scientists feel if the delicate circuitry on board the spacecraft be hit by energetic particles (a situation that possibly caused Mars Odyssey to be) the satellite could be irreversibly damaged.

Be hopeful the scientists would do something to save these satellites from the solar flare blasts in very near future and they are on the job.”
