Injured Bhupathi doubtful for semis
MIL/IndiaTimes.com, Jun 5, 2008.

Bangalore: June 5, 2008 - India’s doubles ace Mahesh Bhupathi, laid low by a painful left calf, is unlikely to take the court for the mixed doubles semi-finals of the French Open. Bhupathi and China’s Jie Zheng made the last four on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old, who strained his calf muscle earlier this summer, aggravated the injury during the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Bangalore-based pro is struggling to even walk and pushing himself in the semifinals on Thursday could well cost him the entire summer, which includes his favourite Grand Slam Wimbledon and the Beijing Olympics.

Bhupathi is being tended to by the French Open doctors. "It was cold out there on Tuesday and I felt the pain at 5-4 in the second set (against France’s Virginie Razzano and Rogier Wassen of Netherlands)," Bhupathi said.

"It hurts even when I’m walking. It’s tender in that area and with Wimbledon just round the corner I can’t risk it. I’ll take a decision just before my match tomorrow (Thursday)."

In a late evening encounter Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik and Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic were playing Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko and Aussie Jordan Kerr for a place in the semifinals against Bhupathi and Zheng.

Despite the progress in the mixed doubles, it has been a wretched fortnight for Bhupathi, whose left calf was sore after he hurt it at practice just before the tournament. Later in the week he caught the flu, which he’s still struggling with.
